12:22 pm - COPS AND CRACK JUICE
|
*** This is a copy of a group email I sent, so you may have already read this!****** ***********************************************************************************
So after travelling 21 hours, here I am in San Francisco!
I got in Friday evening. I am staying at Reagan's house in an area called 24th Street Mission. It's a really nice neighbourhood, predominantly Latino. Reagan had to order food for me this morning at a Mexican sandwich bar cuz I can't speak Spanish! The weather here is so beautiful at the moment, sunny and mild like Sydney was when I left. So no harsh weather changes thank god!
from San Fran airport to Reagan's it felt like I travelled across the globe to be in Melbourne or something. It was different but familiar. My stopover in Tai Pei was spent in the airport, which looks just like Sydney's, and same with san fran, and i'm sure every airport in the world. And yeah, from the train from the airport the view from the window was just like anywhere. So I felt weird, trying to remind myself I was actually on the other side of the world!
It was only when I said to myself the stupid stereotype 'it's america, everyone is packing guns!' I freaked out a bit and felt like I was far from home!! I also felt it when Reagan said if there was an earthquake we are in a good part of the city for safety! aarg! But I'm over my gun fear after Reagan and her housemates had a good laugh at me when I asked if they were packing! As for earthquakes no one has felt one in a while. Yet I take this as meaning they're due for one! Nah, it's all good.
Also, last night we went to a party, and although it was just around the block I got some great American experiences. we went to a corner grocery store to get liquor, and you can buy 40oz (a bit bigger than a longneck) of this stuff called Sparks, which is Malt Liquor (a goon version of beer with a higher alcohol content) mixed with an energy drink as full on as Red Bull. For only $1.25! There were some homies with a ghetto blaster hanging out there as well. Around the corner some cops were taking down the names of some other homies (there are heaps of homies around here), and they looked right out of police academy in their black uniforms, hehe. Actually everything is a bit out of movie or tv. Hanging out the front of Reagan's house I feel like I'm on Sesame Street! Yes, I have that dumb arsed wide eyed first time traveller thing going on but hey, I'm not ashamed of it! It's fun!
Also (now this is getting silly) at the party I was really excited about the fact that there was a free keg thing going on AND it was being served in those big plastic red cup things just like the teen movies! Hahaha, Dave Eden you know what I mean! Just like on Can't Hardly Wait or something!! Haha.
But man, that Sparks Malt liquor got me going, like I was on speed or something. And I introduuced the locals to the expression 'crack juice' which they liked! So now I am hungover (which I think actually means I won't get jetlag. It's a weird theory but it seems to have worked) and getting ready to go for a drive over the bay. I get to go over the Golden Gate bridge. You know, just like the movies!!!
Hope everyone is well! I'll write again soon,
all my love, Jyoti

3:08 pm - Travel Plans
|
For all the lovely yanks, here are some (very vague) travel plans. For the rest of you, just be jealous ok! ;)
I fly into San Francisco 10th June, hanging out there for maybe a week or so.
THEN, I hope to get a cheap ride up to PORTLAND around the 17th June. Dunno how long I am staying there but I plan on going to CLITFEST (www.clitfest.org) in MINNEAPOLIS first weekend of July.
Maybe I will be going to SEATTLE with a friend from Portland, but she is flying to Clitfest from there and it sounds too expensive for me. So if anyone knows of a ride I can get from either Portland or Seattle to Minneapolis for the fest I will provide the BEST conversation and gas money you ever had (I have GREAT gas money!! Maybe not in numerical value, but I will bless it with a secret, uh, Aussie ritual)
From here the rest is hazy. Depends on the characters I meet at Clitfest and how much money I have left (starting from nothing when I get there to no doubt, totally broke). One plan was to go to Pointless Fest in Philly in August. But I would somehow need to get back to SF for my flight home, meaning I'd most likely need to fly from Philly to SF (or is there a cheaper flight path to SF? Like NY to SF?)
ANYWAY, I am undecided.
So if any of you are willing to road trip it with me or have some good travel advice... I would love to hear it!! :)
Hopefully I will meet up with some of you over there!
